Gallo – Special Effects EP [Hell Yeah Recordings]

gallo special effects ep

Hell Yeah Recordings return to Berlin with an EP from Balearic Gabba Sound System member and Buena Onda (Arkoada) resident Gallo. Previous Gallo cuts on the label have consistently surprised and delighted with their sharp, time-tested conflagration of emotional balearic, new-age and ruminative wanderings. The Special Effects EP continues this trend in earnest. Sit down, zone out.

Opener ‘Abysso’ takes a shuffling breakbeat and layers lush celestial dreamscapes in artful fashion. FX purrs left to right across melancholy-twinged strings and that signature reverb-soaked Gallo piano strides boldly into centre space. New-age chorus, emotional transitions and riffing on that piano like only a maestro can. A majestic, magnificent track for quiet reflection in the small hours.

’Saver’ is low-slung funk stylings and dizzying synth bits à la mid 90s fare. That piano returns, hushedly bobbing up and down on the troughs of the waves at sundown. Quiet, tranquil meditations for reflective moments.

Third track ‘Communication’ is signature balearic beat, lazily making its way across a twinkling Mediterranean vista. An elegant, slowly-lapping five and a half minutes of gorgeous textures, weaving and intertweining an ultra-chilled balearic lattice of sound.

These tracks feel like snippets of a feeling, understated portraits of escapist yearnings, dreamy and evocative – just what you’ve come to expect from Gallo.

No full previews yet, but take my word for it. The Special Effects EP drops on the 16th April at Hell Yeah Recordings. Subscribe to their list at Bandcamp (https://hellyeahrec.bandcamp.com/) to stay up to date.
