Komodo is a producer from Jakarta whose debut EP on Not An Animal earlier this year was a hypnotic rock & roll disco romp full of percussive smashers and rough-and-ready production, complete with remixes by Eric Duncan and Latrec. This week sees the release of another three-tracker on Akamady Records. Edit Series Vol. 1 is a trio of rhythmic, dubby groovers unearthed from mystical crates and blessed by the scalpel of a fella who is fast becoming one of my new favourite producers. Check it out…

‘Whack A Kossa’ begins with muscular tom-and-hat action undercut by a smooth and menacing b-line. 80s-esque horror soundtrack keys and flashes of percussion up the ante before turning into a raw acid funk groover fit for the most debauched of dancefloors. Edit #2, ‘Psycho Iko’, is dark and spooky disco with haunted howls and cries, industrial pads and warbling pitch-modulated FX, a descent into the seedy underbelly of disco editry. Is it lifted from Dr John? Maybe, maybe not. Third and final edit, ‘Life’s Just A Dub Game’, brings a quick and percussive rhythm section workout overlain with celestial flute and flashes of dub tape delay, a stern bass and tons of cowbells. A heavy low-end exercise for the middle of the night.
You can purchase Edit Series Vol. 1 via Akamady Records, and follow Komodo on social media to keep up to date with new releases.
